If you’ve ever stood in a skincare aisle wondering whether salicylic acid is right for you, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most studied — and most misunderstood — ingredients in modern dermatology.
What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) — an oil-soluble exfoliant derived originally from willow bark. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, it can travel into the pore and dissolve the “glue” that holds dead skin and sebum together.
How it actually works
Picture your pore as a narrow tunnel. When dead cells and oil mix, they form a plug — the start of every blackhead and breakout. Salicylic acid slips past sebum, gently loosens the plug, and lets your skin do what it was always meant to do: renew.
Why 2% is the sweet spot
Below 1%, the molecule doesn’t penetrate effectively. Above 2%, the chance of irritation rises sharply without much added benefit. That’s why our Clarifying Face Serum is formulated at 2% — the clinically-supported maximum for daily leave-on use.
Who should use it?
- Oily or combination skin
- Frequent blackheads, whiteheads or congested pores
- Mild to moderate inflammatory acne
- Bumpy texture that won’t budge with cleansing alone
“Salicylic acid isn’t a quick fix — it’s a slow, steady reset. Most users see meaningful change in 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use.”
How to use it safely
- Cleanse with a mild, sulphate-free wash.
- Apply 2–3 drops of serum to dry skin.
- Follow with a barrier-supporting moisturiser.
- Always finish your morning routine with SPF 30+.
